About Us
Meet the haberman family
Brett grew up here in Clark County, tearing around on his bike through the fields and tree stands of Battle Ground that are now neighborhoods and strip malls. Jessica was raised on a commercial fruit orchard in Central Washington that is still in production, growing premium apples and cherries.
We both hoped to provide our children with the balance of freedom and responsibility that comes with a rural lifestyle. In 2018, we fell in love with and purchased the property. It was in a state of disrepair, so we set to work with renovations and were able to move to the farm in the spring of 2019. There are still a lot of projects to accomplish, but we have come a long way since then!
We can attest to chickens being gateway animals. It started with six laying hens providing eggs for our family table. That led to three retired horses and a trailer full of free goats. The goats have provided countless hours of entertainment as well as education.
Next, we hosted cows for a local beef producer who needed more pasture for grazing. When the break in the food supply chain occurred due to Covid, we decided it was time for us to start our own beef operation. After raising beef for a few seasons and purchasing hay for the winter, Brett decided to tinker with used hay equipment so that we can bale it ourselves rather than buy it. Now he offers custom haying services in the Ridgefield area.
Over the years, we’ve raised a few rounds of pigs and maybe will again in the future. During the summer, we host bees for a commercial beekeeper in exchange for the most delicious honey. Two barn cats help with pest control and are full of personality. We recently brought home two miniature donkeys because, why not? And a Great Pyrenees rounds out the animal count and is our strong family and livestock guardian dog.
How did we come up with the name Storyteller Farm?
When we first moved in, our oldest two children had just learned to talk, and their imaginations, as well as their vocabularies, were blossoming. Listening to their incredibly tall tales and wild daydreams sparked the idea for the name, and it felt right.
As time has gone by, we’ve come to realize how important it is to share our stories. When we share how the food on the table was raised, the hands that prepared it, the lessons learned in the dirt, and the prayers whispered through hard seasons, we preserve more than memories. We pass down wisdom and the connections that hold communities together. Stories carry the values of hard work, gratitude, stewardship, and hope from one generation to the next. In a world that moves quickly and forgets easily, these stories slow us down and remind us that the most meaningful parts of life are grown patiently, shared around the table, and rooted deeply in faith
Who does the writing?
Hey there! I’m Jessica, and I write for our blog, marketing campaigns, and social media. Hopefully someday I can add a book or two to my resume. Welcome to my own little slice of the internet. I’ve been married to Brett for almost 8 years. He is an entrepreneur with every beat of his heart. Needless to say this has led to some grand adventures together and the promise of more to come.
I have been a nurse for 19 years, most of that time in the emergency department. While this was a dream job and I’m very thankful for my career, after growing up in a farming family, I can’t imagine “home” being anything other than a farm. Especially for my own children.
Through my writing, creative projects, and online community, I share honest glimpses of farm life, motherhood, and the beauty of gathering people together around good food. My hope is to encourage other women and families to slow down, savor the ordinary moments, and remember that the small stories we live every day are the ones worth keeping.
